Exploring Arches National Park with kids is one of those unforgettable family adventures you’ll talk about for years to come. With over 2,000 natural stone arches, dramatic desert landscapes, and family-friendly hiking trails, Arches is a dream destination for families who love outdoor adventure.

We had visited Arches plenty of times solo and as a young married couple, but the first time we visited the National Park with kids was the most memorable, by far. Freya was only 6 weeks old! While the views are breathtaking, traveling with kids in the desert requires some extra planning. Below, you’ll find our top tips for making the most of your family visit, plus a checklist of essentials to pack before you go.

Why Visit Arches National Park with Kids?

Arches isn’t just a place for hardcore hikers—it’s surprisingly kid-friendly (and 'mom-who-just-had-a-baby-and-has-cabin-fever-friendly') if you plan ahead. Here’s why it’s perfect for families:

  • Short, Accessible Hikes: Trails like Sand Dune Arch, Balanced Rock, and Double Arch are short enough for little legs but still deliver jaw-dropping scenery.

  • Epic Photo Ops: Every turn feels like stepping onto another planet. Bring your camera—you’ll want to capture the kids exploring these red rock wonders.

  • Educational Opportunities: The park is a natural classroom. Talk about geology, erosion, and desert wildlife while standing in front of the very formations shaped by them.

  • Junior Ranger Program: Stop by the visitor center so your kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. It adds an interactive and fun layer to their visit. We incorporate National Park Junior Ranger Programs into our yearly curriculum because I find these just as educational as the best social studies curriculum on the market. And they're INTERACTIVE! Tips for Visiting with Kids

  1. Go Early or Late – The desert heat can be intense. Start your hikes early in the morning or near sunset to avoid peak temperatures.

  2. Pace Yourself – Pick 2–3 key stops instead of trying to see everything in one day. Kids will enjoy it more when they’re not rushed. We drove the longer distances and had lunch in the shade during peak UV times.

  3. Pack Smart – Essentials like water, snacks, and sunscreen are non-negotiable in the desert. See our full checklist below.

  4. Rest and Refuel – Build in breaks. Even short hikes feel longer for kids in the sun, so stop for shade and snacks often.

  5. Safety First – The rocks can be slippery, and cliff edges are real. Always remind kids to stay on marked trails.

Family Travel Checklist for Arches National Park

Here’s what to pack to keep your family safe, comfortable, and happy while exploring Arches:

  • Plenty of water (hydration packs are a lifesaver!)

  • Snacks (think high-energy options like granola bars, fruit, or trail mix)

  • Sunscreen (apply often—desert sun is intense)

  • Wide-brim hats / umbrellas for shade

  • Walking or hiking shoes with good traction

  • Lightweight clothing (breathable + sun protective)

  • Camera or smartphone for capturing those epic family moments

  • First-aid kit (band-aids, wipes, blister care, bug bite kit)

  • Baby/toddler carrier or hiking backpack (for younger kids)

  • Map or downloaded offline trail guide (cell service is limited)

Pro Tip: Freeze a few water bottles overnight before your trip—they’ll double as ice packs for snacks and melt into cold drinking water later.

Family-Friendly Hikes to Try

  • Sand Dune Arch – Shady, short, and fun for kids to play in the sand.

  • Balanced Rock – Less than a half-mile walk with an impressive payoff.

  • Double Arch – A short stroll to one of the most iconic formations (and a great spot for family photos).

  • Windows Trail – An easy loop with sweeping views of multiple arches.

Final Thoughts

Visiting Arches National Park with kids is an adventure that combines breathtaking landscapes with hands-on learning and family bonding. With the right preparation (and plenty of snacks!), your trip will be as memorable for your little ones as it is for you.

So pack your gear, load up the RV, and get ready for an adventure that proves family travel can be both epic and unforgettable. 🌄
