Honest First Time Botox Experience: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly and What I Wish I Knew

Considering Botox for the first time? You aren't alone. In December, after months of debating... I decided to go for it! Botox is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments today—but there’s still a lot of mystery (and misinformation) around it. Whether you’re thinking about your first appointment or just curious about what it’s really like, I’m sharing what I wish I had known before getting Botox—including everything I learned the hard way 😅.
From post-treatment side effects to how long it actually lasts, here’s a real look at my Botox journey, answers to frequently asked questions, and the truth behind those “magic” results you see on social media. Here's my honest first time Botox experience... the nitty-gritty to help you navigate yours!
It Takes Time to Kick In
One key lesson I learned is that Botox doesn’t show immediate results. I walked into the clinic expecting to see instant changes, but most don't see the full results for two weeks! I started seeing results after 4 days, but it took my husband, Chad (my partner in this Botox adventure) almost two full weeks to see a difference. Everyone’s body responds differently. Also, mine weirdly wore off after just 3 weeks—which I explain in more detail at the end of the post.
It's a Long-Term Commitment
Botox isn’t a “one and done” kind of treatment. it’s a long-term commitment. Most practitioners suggest follow-up sessions every three months to maintain the look. Financially, it adds up fast! Botox typically costs between $10 to $15 per unit. A typical session might require 35 to 45 units.
For those contemplating regular Botox sessions, being prepared for both the time and financial aspects is crucial. 💸

The Initial Aftermath
Let me prepare you for the post-treatment aftermath... After my injections, I left the clinic with noticeable welts on my face. Totally normal, but it was not the most glamorous look. They faded within a few hours, but I definitely recommend timing your appointment accordingly. Maybe no luncheons or photoshoots right after.

Another important guideline is to avoid lying down for about eight hours post-treatment. This is crucial as it helps to prevent the neurotoxins from moving to unintended areas. You also can't take hot showers, get too hot, or rub your face. Who knew looking good came with so many rules?
It doesn't erase wrinkles!
Contrary to popular belief, Botox doesn't remove wrinkles—it freezes the muscles that cause them, preventing expression lines from deepening. It’s more about prevention than reversal. It does relax the muscles though to a point that your deep wrinkles seem to fade. My fine lines though.. didn't budge!
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, treatments like Botox can reduce the appearance of frown lines by up to 80%, depending on muscle activity, which I would agree is accurate.. at least in my case. This highlights the importance of being proactive about your skincare routine alongside Botox treatments for optimal results. I wish I would have started getting treatments in my 20s! lol. I would be broke, but at least I'd be unwrinkled!
The Quick Fade
One of the biggest surprises for me was how quickly the effects of Botox can wear off. Most people see results last for 3–4 months. But on me? Only 3 weeks. Yep. Some bodies metabolize Botox faster than others. This was unexpected and kind of disappointing. This reminder of the variability in individual responses to treatments was eye-opening.
I was told a lot of factors play into this; faster metabolisms tend to 'metabolize' the medication quicker (I take metabolism boosters, work out like a crazy person, and eat to speed my metabolism), being in the heat (I run in the heat 5-10 miles about 3 times a week), massaging your face (I use a Clarisonic twice a day)... All of these things play a role in how long it lasts.
If you're contemplating Botox, it's wise to accept that the results may not last as long as you hope. Therefore, budgeting for more frequent visits is a smart move to keep the youthful look.
Botox FAQs — Real Talk
How long does Botox last?
In my case, effects lasted about three weeks, while many others enjoy results for up to three months.
How much does it cost?
Costs range between $10 and $15 per unit. Expect to need about 35 to 45 units for an effective treatment, summing it up to $350 to $675 or more per session.
How often should I get it?
They recommend 12 weeks, but you may need it sooner, like I did.
Side Effects
Interestingly, despite Botox being hailed for alleviating headaches, I experienced severe ocular migraines following my sessions. It's worth considering if you're prone to migraines or headaches before proceeding with Botox. I was told it isn't dangerous, just annoying.
Can Botox Cause Botulism?
You might have heard about botulism in connection with Botox and wondered if there’s any truth to it. The short answer is YES, it can happen—but it’s extremely rare.
Botox is made from a highly purified, carefully diluted form of botulinum toxin—the same toxin that causes botulism. In large amounts, this toxin can interfere with the nervous system and cause serious symptoms. That condition is called botulism.
Now, when Botox is used in medical or cosmetic treatments, the doses are tiny and controlled. However, in rare cases, something called iatrogenic botulism can occur. This is botulism brought on by a medical procedure—like if too much toxin is injected or if it spreads beyond the intended area. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms might include muscle weakness, difficulty breathing, vision issues, or even paralysis.
Again, these reactions are very rare, especially when Botox is administered by trained professionals. But it’s always good to stay informed and know the potential risks, no matter how small. Also... don't go getting poked by any person pedaling Botox! Use a reputable clinic.
My Final Thoughts on my first time Botox experience...
Botox can be a great tool for maintaining a youthful, fresh look—but it’s not without its quirks. For me, it was a mixed bag: I loved how smooth and relaxed my forehead looked, but I wasn’t prepared for how short-lived the results would be or the unexpected side effects.
If you're thinking about trying Botox, do your research, consult a licensed injector, and set realistic expectations. This isn’t a magic fix—but it can be a helpful part of your long-term skincare and aging strategy.
